Finally found the insert key on my macbook pro keyboard

I finally managed to figure out what the insert key is on my macbook pro. I missed it a lot because in Resharper the standard command to generate code is Alt+Ins. This key combination seems to be engraved in my brain because it was really hard for me to use it with a different key combination. Anyway the winning combinations are:

Insert: fn+return

Alt+Insert: fn + alt/option + return

  1. you are obviously doing win dev on your macbook – are you using parallels? I am buying a macbook pro this sunday – and I have been a win developer for 15yrs but I like doing mac dev as well – any recommendations on what I should have on the macbook pro beside 4gb ram?

cool layout on the blog by the way…

  2. Hi,

I got a macbook pro earlier this year. I’ve been on windows for as long as I can remember and it is my bread and butter. I develop a lot of stuff with .NET and for that I use visual studio :)
I use vmware fusion 2 beta on my machine because it’s the fastest one around and it has support for dual monitors also in unity mode.
I’ve got it setup so that I can use windows vista 32-bit ( I use vista because it has IIS 7) through my boot camp partition or through vmware fusion. I had a lot of problems with parallels since SP 1 got released and switched to fusion 2 then.

Other recommendations would be get at least a 24″ monitor to hook up to your laptop.

I’m pretty much a plain vanilla kind of guy unless I think it is really really worth it so my setup is pretty simple :)

  3. Yea, .net is my bread and butter as well… I currently code on an alienware but the wife wants a new laptop soooo….

Did you buy vmware fusion apart from the macbook pro?

Thanks for the info… best of luck

  4. Hi; VMware Fusion is separate, only iLife is bundled with new machines.

It’s more than worth it though. As a 1.x user I get a free 2.x license, and the current beta’s which you can download and use your key on bring Fusion up to parity with the features most people desire in their Workstation product. Their support isn’t as steep as Parallels’ and I find it to be more stable and better integrated with the host environment and a wider array of guest operating systems. Performance is at least on-par.

  5. Awesome Post!

Just got my macbook pro and running vista – was freaking out that I had no insert key – lot’s of other posts simply say it doesn’t exist!

    Thanks for your great Tip.

  6. Awesome! THank you!

  7. The “INSERT key’ on MacBook Pro = fn home, (the left arrow on your right side). It is mainly helpful for MAYA users!

    Good luck!

La clé “INSERT” sur le MacBook Pro = fn home, (la flèche de gauche à ta droite). C’est surtout utile pour les utilisateurs de MAYA!

    Bonne chance:)

    Frenchy1st :)

  8. You are a star! Thank you. I was lookinmg for it for 3 months :)

  12. Hi, the keys you mention for getting to the Insert Key is not working for me, any thoughts

  13. I am probably on my computer and laptop an average of 8 hours a day, in my office, traveling, on WIFI on planes, hotel room, sometimes when I am driving (which is certainly not safe), having coffee at Starbucks on WIFI.

And just when I thought I had survived all my children’s efforts to keep me humble, my grand son recently pulled up my shirt, laughed out loud, pinched my protruding belly button, and screamed, “look at Pa’s belly button. It is sooooooooo funny!!”

  14. Thank you so much, this post has helped me immensely!!

  15. thankss for sharing! i <3 you! lol it was driving me crazzzyy hahah

  16. For VMWare Fusion users – just go to VMware preferences, section Keyboard & Mouse, tab Key Mappings and add Insert with mapping which is most suitable for you.

    I’m using fn+Enter mapped to Shift+Insert – it’s Paste in SecureCRT.

  17. I’m also using VMWare Fusion and a Macally keyboard. There doesn’t seem to be a fn key on my keyboard and there is fn + Enter does not work on the macbook pro. I can’t figure out how to map it as the last post described. Can anyone help?

  18. I ended up mapping the F12 to insert and it worked like a charm! Thanks!

  19. It doesn’t work with my external keyboard; I use Quickbooks and often have to add a line in a document, the shortcut for which is “Ctrl/Ins” if using a conventional keyboard. Any suggestions…?

  20. Thank you so much. I was looking for this for a long time.
I’mworking with Paralels. Your trick works great.

  21. Jeffrey Faurillo

Thanks Buddy! Now I know where to enable and disable insert key for mac. Kudos!

  22. @Kim – or others: And how do I, please, map F12 to insert on my MacBook Pro? Any help greatly appreciated! TIA!

  23. Easiest fix of all is just buy a PC keyboard and plug the damn thing in.
    INS works like a charm

  24. Fn + Return is actually the numpad Enter key (they are indeed different!).

  25. Hm, thank you a lot for the hint, either F13 and FN + enter work fine for me. But, how do I disable the insert function? :-(

  26. Ah, never mind, just found out! You just need to use the same command again!
